Wiley and Tulane University Libraries Sign Agreement to Publish More Open Access Research

HOBOKEN, N.J. – December 8, 2022 – Wiley, one of the world’s largest publishers and a global leader in research and education, today announced a new three-year open access agreement with Tulane University Libraries.

This agreement will provide Tulane University Libraries affiliates with access to Wiley’s complete journal portfolio and enable participating researchers to publish research in Wiley’s complete portfolio of nearly 2,000 hybrid and gold open access journals, including those published by Hindawi, starting January 1, 2023.

“Wiley is delighted to join with Tulane University Libraries to help their researchers make more of their work open access,” said Kathryn Sharples, Vice President, Open Research, Wiley. “Wiley is accelerating the transition to open access across the United States with many agreements over the past year including the Big Ten Academic Alliance, Carolina Consortium, Virginia Library Consortium, and we’re excited to now add Tulane Universities Libraries to that growing list.”

This is the fourth agreement with a major scholarly journal publisher that Tulane University Libraries has negotiated to waive the article publication charges for Tulane authors who want their articles to be published as open access or publicly available. Wiley, however, is by far the largest publisher among them, publishing over 8 million articles across subject areas.

“Transformational open access agreements can produce a greater return on investment to the institution overall for the dollars its libraries spend on journal subscriptions,” said Andy Corrigan, interim Dean of Libraries at Tulane. “Moreover, we consider this a big win since because of our geographic location we’ve needed to secure these agreements independently from the US research library consortia involved in these agreements thus far.”

Wiley is committed to paving the way toward an open future globally, having achieved open access partnerships with over 2,200 institutions spanning 23 countries. Wiley established its first US open access arrangement in a pilot with Iowa State University in 2021 and has more recently completed open access agreements with several institutions and large consortia across the country.

Founded as The Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 to train New Orleans doctors in the fight against yellow fever and cholera, Tulane University has a long history at the forefront of groundbreaking research. More than 180 years later, Tulane has become one of the most respected educational and research institutions in the country. Tulane is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, a select group of the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada. Tulane also is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a university with “very high research activity.” Of more than 4,300 higher educational institutions rated by the foundation, Tulane remains in a prestigious category that includes only two percent of universities nationwide.

Tulane’s libraries are an intellectual hub for the university community. Together they comprise the largest research library in the Gulf South region, with millions of items available in physical and electronic formats. Its unique collections document the peoples and cultures of New Orleans, the state, and the region, with especially strong holdings in early jazz, regional architecture, local and regional history, and Tulane’s own institutional history.
