Wiley authors Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur have won the prestigious 2015 Thinkers50 Strategy Award – one of a number of Distinguished Achievement Awards given out to celebrate the very best of strategic thinking. They have also been named #15 in the Thinkers50 global ranking of most influential living management thinkers. The announcement was made in London on 9 November.

Published every two years, the Thinkers50 Ranking remains the premier ranking of its kind, and the Thinkers50 Awards (introduced in 2011) have been described (by the Financial Times and others) as the “Oscars of management thinking.” The Thinkers50 brand is admired globally for its objectivity and market intelligence, confirming its position as the leading authority in management ideas.

Osterwalder and Pigneur, authors of the pioneering visual book Business Model Generation (Wiley, 2010), invented the “Business Model Canvas,” a strategic management tool to design, test, build and manage business models, which is used by companies worldwide. The authors have since published two further titles, Business Model You(Wiley, 2012) and Value Proposition Design (Wiley, 2014).

Dr Alexander Osterwalder is the lead author of the international bestseller Business Model Generation, a passionate entrepreneur, and in-demand speaker. He co-founded Strategyzer.com, a software company specialising in tools and content for strategic management and innovation. He is a frequent keynote speaker in leading organisations and top universities around the world, including Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, IESE and IMD. Follow him on Twitter at: @alexosterwalder.

Additional Information

Value Proposition Design: How to Create Products and Services Customers Want (WILEY; October 2014; Paperback and ebook; $35; 978-1-118-96805-5), by Alexander Osterwalder, Yves Pigneur, the authors of the international bestseller Business Model Generation, Gregory Bernarda and Alan Smith, is for anyone who has been frustrated by business meetings based on endless conversations, hunches and intuitions, expensive new product launches that blew up, or simply disappointed by the failure of a good idea.

The book helps readers tackle a core challenge of every business—creating compelling products and services customers want to buy. Using the same stunning visual format as in the authors’ global bestseller, Business Model Generation, this sequel explains how to use the “Value Proposition Canvas” a practical tool to design, test, create, and manage products and services customers actually want.

Value Proposition Design simplifies the complex process of designing and testing value propositions, taking the guesswork out of creating products and services that perfectly match customers’ needs and desires into quickly readable illustrations with only the most practical, important details. The result? You’ll learn more, in less time, and have fun along the way,” Dr. Osterwalder says.

With Value Proposition Design, businesses of all sizes will understand the patterns of great value propositions, get closer to customers, and avoid wasting time with ideas that won’t work. The book complements and perfectly integrates with the ”Business Model Canvas” from Business Model Generation, a tool embraced by startups and large corporations such as MasterCard, 3M, Coca Cola, GE, Fujitsu, LEGO, Colgate-Palmolive, and many more.

Practical exercises, illustrations and tools help readers immediately improve a product, service, or design a new business idea. In addition, the book gives readers exclusive access to an online companion on Strategyzer.com, with access to interactive exercises, assessment tools, peer interaction, and downloadable pdfs, checklists, and more.

The exclusive online companion has been designed from the ground up to help readers apply what they learn in the book. Inside, they’ll find exercises guiding them step by step through the messy process of designing and testing a great value proposition. They’ll also get dozens of downloadable tools, templates, and posters all designed to amplify the power of the book,” Dr. Pigneur explains,

“Since the launch of Business Model Generation, many practitioners were asking us for - a tool dedicated to describing how an organization creates value for its customers with its products and services; stronger guidance on how to integrate our tools with testing methodologies such as Customer Development and Lean Startup; more hand-holding on how to integrate our tools into people's daily work practice,” Dr. Osterwalder explains. “Value Proposition Design is a direct answer to satisfy these three strong customer demands that we've seen over the last couple of years in order to keep our community growing and empowering them to be more agile than ever.”
